Germany Plans for Additional DAB+ Multiplex

Second national DAB+ multiplex could arrive as soon as 2017

Germany’s Commission for Licensing and Supervision (Kommission fuer Zulassung und Aufsicht — ZAK) met last week to decide the specifics of the first nationwide digital radio multiplex, reported Teltarif. Most notably it allocated capacity on the national ensemble DR Deutschland to Schlagerparadies GmbH and Media Broadcast.

During the meeting, ZAK also discussed the possibility of a second national commercial DAB+ multiplex. The organization said that there is already interest in a second multiplex, and providing the availability of frequency resources, allocation for the new multiplex could be done in the first half of 2017.

“Another nationwide multiplex offers not only expands diversity in the digital audio broadcasting, it can also contribute to the future development of digital terrestrial broadcasting market,” said Siegfried Schneider, ZAK chairman, in the decision.
