General Motors believes the dashboard is the next big technology platform and the U.S. automaker plans to capitalize on that.
GM Chairman/CEO Dan Akerson says the automaker intends to use its OnStar division and new 4G LTE mobile broadband capability to bring more connected services to consumers.
Speaking to the Chief Executives’ Club of Boston recently, Ackerson cited a J.D. Power study that shows more than two-thirds of the people who purchase a new car own a smartphone; The automaker says 80% of those buyers say connectivity “strongly” influences their vehicle purchasing decisions, reported the Detroit News.
GM believes its out ahead of its competitors because of safety and security features OnStar provides to 6.5 million vehicles globally. The automaker plans to offer 4G mobile Internet access in most 2015 vehicles sold in North America, beginning in mid-2014.
