Government Seeks More Time on Ownership Appeal

Government Seeks More Time on Ownership Appeal

The Justice Department, on behalf of the FCC, is asking for more time to decide whether and how to ask the Supreme Court to challenge an appeals court ruling concerning media ownership rules. If the extension is granted, the commission has until Jan. 31 to decide how or if to challenge a June ruling that told the commission to better justify its numerical station ownership limits. That ruling stemmed from a challenge to the FCC’s new media ownership rules by the Prometheus Radio Project. The court allowed the commission to enact the new radio market definition, but much of the TV portion of the rules was blocked.
If the extension is not granted, the deadline to file runs out Jan. 3.
