American Women in Radio and Television announced the 2004 winners of its annual Gracie Allen Awards (“Gracies”), which recognize exemplary programming created for women, by women and about women in all facets of electronic media. Established in 1975, the Gracies are presented by the Foundation of AWRT, the philanthropic arm of the organization that supports educational programs, charitable activities, public service campaigns and the electronic media.
Among the winners in local radio, Magic 106.7/WWJX(FM) host Candy O’Terry took the honors for Individual Achievement Award for program host; Philadelphia’s WHYY(FM) won for “Home Health,” which was awarded in the Best News Feature – Soft News category; New York-base CBS Radio News’ “Giles and Moriarty” won for Outstanding Talk Show (Radio); KNRC(AM), Denver, Colo., won for best News Story – Single Entry for a feature entitled, “Women Firefighters”; and WGBH(FM) Educational Foundation, Boston, Mass. won for Outstanding Special Program (Radio) for “Esther: The Feast of Masks.”
National winners in radio include Lia Knight, host of Jones Radio Networks’ “Lia,” who won in the category of Individual Achievement, Best Program Host; NPR’s “Justice Talking” won for Outstanding Talk Show (Radio); and XM Satellite Radio/Sonic Theater, Channel 163/generations Productions won for Outstanding Entertainment Program-Drama (Radio).
