Pursuing video and data outlets for radio broadcasters, Harris has signed a strategic alliance with Swedish company Factum Electronics AB.
It said the deal will allow Harris “to offer comprehensive Digital Multimedia Broadcasting (DMB) and Digital Audio Broadcasting (DAB) solutions to broadcasters that want to offer digital audio, mobile video and data services over a single platform to consumer handheld devices.” Both companies will distribute and market Harris and Factum products.
Harris makes DMB and DAB transmitters; Factum will provide head-end equipment for compression and multiplexing of digital audio, video and data services into a transport stream en route to the transmitter. “The Harris transmitters would receive and modulate the signals in preparation for over-the-air transmission to mobile devices,” the companies stated.
Rich Redmond of Harris said in the statement, “The ability for digital radio broadcasters to transmit video and data services alongside audio has raised interest levels around the globe.”
Harris also offers mobile TV transmission and head-end platforms for DVB-H and FLO standards through its Television Broadcast Systems business unit.
