Efforts to rebuild in Iraq are trickling down to the broadcast sector.
Harris Corp. said it has won a contract for radio transmitters and related equipment for use by Radio Sawa, Radio Free Iraq and Voice of America.
The contract was awarded by the Broadcasting Board of Governors International Broadcasting Bureau. It includes Harris Quest-1 1kW FM radio transmitters, Z10FM 10kW FM radio transmitters and Z5FM 5kW FM radio transmitters.
Orban equipment is part of the contract to Harris; Orban/CRL said earlier this month that the order includes 38 of its 8218 Stereo Encoder/Generators and 20 Optimod-FM 2200 Audio Processors.
Gear will be used for various sites in Iraq, including the city of Baghdad, Harris stated.
Harris also has created an Iraq Initiatives Office and named Managing Director Youssef (Joe) Sleiman to head it. The company said it hopes to pool the efforts of its five communications businesses “to address the business opportunities related to the rebuilding of Iraq.”
