HD Radio-Delivered Traffic, Weather Demoed in Tokyo

IBiquity Digital demoing digital radio data capabilities at ITS show

IBiquity Digital is in Japan this week demoing advanced data capabilities of HD Radio.

The tech developer has a booth at the Intelligent Transportation Society’s World Congress, taking place Oct. 14–18 in Tokyo.

ITS covers every aspect of transportation, from systems that use vehicle-infrastructure and

vehicle-to-vehicle communication to prevent accidents and traffic congestion, to public transport facilities like buses and trains. Test rides that the some 10,000 expected attendees could attend include several automated driving and advanced assisted driving systems. Various demos include emergency assist for “pedal misapplication,” for example, when the driver hits the gas instead of the brake and could drive into a wall and several demos of collision avoidance systems at various speeds.

IBiquity is demonstrating advanced data capabilities like on-demand traffic from the Broadcaster Traffic Consortium and Clear Channel’s Total Traffic Network in vehicles from four automakers: Toyota, Lexus, Mitsubishi and Mazda. IBiquity Digital SVP/Marketing Joe D’Angelo tells Radio World it’s the first time the tech developer can demonstrate all four.

Weather forecasts delivered through HD Radio technology will also be on display from Lexus, Toyota and Mitsubishi from the BTC and CCTTN.
