HD Radio-Integrated Smartphone To Be Unveiled at NAB

In an interview Paul Brenner of Emmis Communications says that attendees of the upcoming NAB Show will have a chance to see a smartphone with an HD Radio feature.

Emmis Communications SVP/CTO Paul Brenner tells Inside Indiana Business that a prototype HD Radio-integrated smartphone will be introduced at the upcoming NAB Show.

We’ve reported that Emmis Interactive, iBiquity Digital, Intel as well as BIA/Kelsey in a project management role, have been working on the NAB FASTROAD-funded project and that they were likely to unveil a device at this show. Proponents have been approaching wireless companies about the concept and hope to see devices on the market this year.

Brenner is the recipient of this year’s NAB Radio Engineering Achievement Award. He tells Inside Indiana Business host Gary Dick the demo follows Emmis’ role in establishing the Broadcaster Traffic Consortium, which includes 19 radio companies that distribute traffic, fuel pricing and other information as well as advertising to NAVTEQ.

New Garmin devices out this year feature traffic and other information using data provided by the FM RDS and HD Radio signals of member BTC stations.

Brenner is president the BTC. In the interview, he says the BTC plans to launch one auto product in 2013 “that will do well against satellite telematics.”
