In light of the global computer problems apparently caused by a Microsoft software update, FEMA is advising alerting authorities to verify their access to the IPAWS system and check the functions of the tools and applications they use to create and send alerts.
But the Integrated Public Alert and Warning System itself has not been affected, according to an email from the organization.
“IPAWS is fully operational,” it wrote in the email on Friday morning Eastern time.
“EAS, WEA, NOAA Weather Radio and All-Hazard feed alert dissemination paths are working normally. IPAWS Customer Support and Technical Services Support Facility functions are operational and available.”
But it recommended that alerting authorities check their software access and availability.
It’s unclear how widely the CrowdStrike problem has affected U.S. media. Sky News UK is among the organizations that were hit, according to our sister publication TVBEurope, which reported that Australian broadcasters Sky News Australia and ABC were affected. “AWS, NOW, Virgin Media, and BT are also among the companies impacted, according to DownDetector.”
