House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Rep. Ed Royce, (R-Calif.), has slated a hearing next week on the Broadcasting Board of Governors.
The BBG is the federal entity with oversight responsibilities for broadcasting activities of Voice of America, Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, Radio Free Asia, Radio/TV Martí and the Middle East Broadcast Networks, which includes Radio Sawa and Alhurrah TV.
The topic for the June 26 hearing is “An Agency ‘Defunct.’”
Several former BBG chairman are slated to testify, including James Glassman, founding executive director of the George W. Bush Institute, Enders Wimbush, executive director for Strategy & Development at the National Bureau of Asian Research and Jeff Hirschberg, chairman of the Northeast Maglev, which markets and deploys Japan Railway Co.’s systems and technology to international markets.
We reported the BBG board is down several members. The most recent departure was interim board presiding Governor Michael Lyndon, who stepped down in May, citing scheduling conflicts.
A blog by BBG Watch applauded Royce for slating the hearing, saying it’s long overdue.
