HHB FlashMic Plugs Into America

Program uses mic/recorder hybrid for location acquisition

Eugene Osborn Smith is basically a one-man band. He does it all for his program, “Plugging Into America,” heard mostly in the central New York state area on the Central New York Radio Group, based in Oneonta, N.Y.

Clocking in at five minutes, the program features interviews and music segments with people not normally on radio: policemen, soldiers’ family members and folks who make up the background noise for most of us.

To acquire material, Smith uses an HHB FlashMic, a double-duty tool combining a Sennheiser microphone with an onboard solid-state recorder. His “crew” consists of producer Loretta Rotunno, so maybe Smith’s a two-person band.

Rotunno told the manufacturer she appreciates the mic’s convenience and sound quality.
