The media ownership issue generated intense interest from broadcast owners, public interest groups and citizens over the past 20 months. Lobbying and protesting became more intense in the days leading up to the meeting. The amount of e-mails and other public comments filed before the vote overwhelmed the FCC’s Web site for a time Friday.
To keep order during the vote, security was increased for the meeting. Normally about 40 media outlets are covering an FCC item during a typical vote, said an agency spokesman. Monday’s vote drew representatives from more than twice that many media outlets.
