FCC staffers must now sort through about 20,000 comments from the public about whether satellite radio should be allowed to air local programming.
June 4 was the deadline for those who wished to file comments at the agency on NAB’s petition to ban local traffic and weather information on satellite digital radio. NAB says the new channels violate the spirit of the spectrum authorization for XM Satellite Radio and Sirius Satellite Radio. NAB and other opponents believe the satcasters should air national programming only.
Both XM and Sirius say they are abiding by FCC rules.
XM asked listeners to tell the commission they value the service the way it is and provided listeners a way to file comments using its Web site.
