Howard Anderson Passes

Founder of Highway Radio, former NAB Radio Board chairman

Radio owner and former NAB Radio Board member Howard Anderson has passed away. He was 85.

The NAB confirmed his death and noted Anderson served on the board from 1994 to 1998 with two terns as vice chair. He was chairman of the NAB Radio Board in 1997.

In radio circles, Anderson was most known for founding Highway Radio in Nevada in 1980. The format targets visitors traveling from Southern California to Nevada and increased the state’s casino traffic, according to the website for the stations.

Anderson’s broadcasting career began in 1948, according to LARadio.com.

NAB characterized Anderson as a “real gentleman” and a “huge supporter and believer in the importance of the NAB Political Action Committee who will be missed.”

A more in-depth biography can be found here. An L.A. Times article, “Radio Station an Oasis for Mojave Desert Listeners,” has information on Anderson’s SoCal broadcasting empire.

Anderson was also on the board of the Southern California Broadcasters Association. He also worked with Howard Hughes for many years.
