German public-service broadcaster Hessischer Rundfunk (hr) is using several Barix audio over IP (AoIP) components for monitoring of up to three FM programs from a transmission site in nearby Friedberg.
The hr broadcast signal is fed directly from the transmitter to a Barix Instreamer 100 audio encoder and then streamed back to the broadcasting center via a virtual private network (VPN) for confidence monitoring.
In the event of modulation loss, a backup feed via IP is activated with an Instreamer unit at the broadcasting center streaming station audio across the VPN connection to the transmitter.
In addition to routing audio over IP and outputting error-messages, hr also uses Barix components to control RDS and ancillary data, as well as Barionet IP controllers and temperature sensors for various control and monitoring tasks.
