Increased Testing for DRM

The consortium announces ‘renewed interest in Europe’

According to the Digital Radio Mondiale Consortium, the increasing interest in DRM+ is leading to new trials on different frequency bands and involving more and more commercial broadcasters.

Telecom Bretagne University, supported by the Region of Brittany, recently held a scientific trial in Brest, France, in band II using a 300 W Harris transmitter; while Agora FM, near Nice, is at present conducting a test in band I at 60 MHz. Digidia’s Soprano+ DRM+ modulator and Alto+ DRM+ content server were used in Brest and are currently being used in the Agora FM trial.

In a third and larger trial, which took place in May and June in Trondheim, Norway, a commercial radio network used a Nautel 300 W transmitter and a Digidia content server in band II. The trial was held in conjunction with DRM members such as Fraunhofer IIS, RFmondial and with the full support of the Norwegian commercial broadcaster Venture 21, said DRM.

“We are proud of the support and technical expertise we are getting from our key members supplying transmitters, content servers, modulators and full DRM USB receiver solutions,” Ruxandra Obreja, DRM Consortium Chair. “In Europe we are demonstrating that there is a cheap and effective solution for also digitizing small radio stations (commercial and community) which can run on their own or compliment other multiplex solutions.”
