No one expected new Sirius President/CEO not to go after more advertising and now he has spoken theoretically about getting into local advertising, if the company could gain exclusive rights to sports broadcasts in markets, as terrestrial radio loses interest. Mel Karmazin told the Bear Stearns Media Conference some teams have approached the satcaster about obtaining exclusive sports rights. If this scenario ever played out, Karmazin said, the satcaster could air the local feed nationwide, like it does for the NFL games now. Only, unlike the NFL games it airs now, Sirius would sell the ads, instead of re-transmitting the feed of a local broadcaster, and airing those ads.
