Khadija Ismayilova Receives IWMF Award

She reported on corruption at the highest levels of Azerbaijani government

The International Women’s Media Foundation has awarded Khadija Ismayilova, an investigative journalist and talk show host with RFE/RL’s Azerbaijani Service, with the 2012 “Courage in Journalism Award.”

IWMF presents the award each year to three women journalists who have “demonstrated extraordinary strength of character in pursuing their profession under difficult or dangerous circumstances.”

Ismayilova, who will accept the IWMF award later this year at events in New York and Los Angeles, has during her career, filed several award-winning reports on corruption in the highest echelons of Azerbaijani society.

Other winners of the award this year are, according to an IWMF release: “Reeyot Alemu, 31, an Ethiopian columnist currently imprisoned on charges of terrorism after writing critiques of her country’s government and Asmaa al-Ghoul, 30, a Palestinian blogger and freelance writer who has received death threats for her commentary on the culture and politics of Gaza.”
