The DTV transition earlier this month spelled the end of local TV broadcasts on 87.7 on the FM dial for many communities. But one station in the northwest is taking steps to get their news back on the radio airwaves.
Beginning July 6, KHQ, the NBC affiliate in Spokane, Wash., will be simulcast weekdays on KJRB 790AM Radio. Radio Spokane, KJRB owner, will also feature daily local news updates from the KHQ Local Newsroom on KJRB, KEYF, 101.1FM and Cat 93.7FM.
“KHQ broadcast its signal on 87.7FM for years, unfortunately the switch to digital television forced KHQ of the radio,” said Patricia McRae, KHQ president and GM. “Our audience overwhelmingly responded, asking to get KHQ back on the radio dial. We’ve been working since February to meet the demands of our viewers and now we couldn’t be happier to announce that Radio Spokane has helped us to make that happen.” KHQ shut off its analog transmitter in February.
“We are thrilled to partner with KHQ to offer the best local TV news on the radio,” said Radio Spokane Operations Manager Mike Skot. “Together KHQ and Radio Spokane are committed to servicing our local community.”
