Klose to BBG

Former RFE/RL chief to be acting President and CEO

Kevin Klose will return to Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty as acting president and CEO while the Broadcasting Board of Governors continues its search for a permanent replacement. Klose was president of RFE/RL from 1994–1997.

Current President and CEO Steven Korn announced his resignation earlier this month. It is effective Jan. 25.

Klose said, “I look forward to reconnecting with many friends in Prague and Russia and to working with the entire RFE/RL team.”

Michael Lynton, the Board’s presiding governor, said, “As a former chief of both National Public Radio and RFE/RL, Kevin is seasoned at leading broadcasters through critical transitions.”

BBG Board member Victor Ashe touched on an overarching issue, referring to recent budgetary and staff troubles: “RFE/RL is fortunate to have him as we face and resolve many difficult and serious issues.”

Klose has had an interesting career including a 25-year stint at The Washington Post, much of it as a foreign correspondent, president of National Public Radio for 10 years and recently dean of the Philip Merrill College of Journalism at the University of Maryland.
