KSTJ(FM) to Demonstrate BE HD Radio Audio and Data at NAB2004

Using a BE HD Radio transmitter, Beasley-owned KSTJ(FM), plans to broadcast live audio and traffic data to HD Radio equipped car stereos in conjunction with the 2004 NAB conference in Las Vegas next month.
According to BE, KSTJ is the first commercial station in the Las Vegas market to broadcast in HD Radio, and is the first station in the nation to employ HD Radio for navigational datacasting. NAB2004 attendees will be able to hear KSTJ programming, view local traffic data (with qualified equipment), and see information such as song title and artist on HD Radio tuners at BE booth N1902, thanks to BE’s new data software management system and broadband link.
The demo has been updated since it was done at CES, said BE.
KSTJ is broadcasting with a BE FMi 201 HD Radio transmitter, BE FXi 250 exciter, and BE FSi 10 HD Radio signal generator into a three-bay Shively 6813-3 antenna separate from the main analog broadcast.
Also on display at the show, BE’s new Big Pipe broadband link, at 45Mbps, can carry digital audio, analog audio, AES/EBU uncompressed audio, and HD Radio data – plus Ethernet and RS232 communication links. BE’s new Total Radio Program and Data Integration is for scheduling, managing and coding data.
In-vehicle navigational systems made by Visteon and Navigation Technologies also will pick up traffic data transmitted by KSTJ during the show, and will use the information to interpret traffic patterns and overlay the results onto navigational maps showing traffic hot spots.
KSTJ brings to seven the total number of Beasley Broadcast Group stations using BE transmitters for HD Radio conversion.
