Those who follow Clear Channel know Mark Mays has been running the company as interim CEO since May.
Now the company has officially named Mark president and CEO. His father Lowry has been dealing with health issues including brain surgery earlier this year.
Mark Mays has taken a visible profile lately, defending the company, for instance in a letter to Rolling Stone this month. Clear Channel is radio’s largest, and its most closely watched by investors. As Forbes put it in reporting the passing of the CEO baton:
“Now for the hard part: Mark Mays is taking over the company at a time when an indecency crackdown and media ownership regulation are creating great turmoil in American radio. The station paid a record $1.75 million fine earlier this year for offensive broadcast by disc jockeys including Howard Stern, who recently said that he was ending his contract with Viacom’s Infinity Broadcasting to jump to Sirius Satellite Radio. Will Mays follow Stern skyward? As they say in the business, stay tuned.”
