Meet Leslie Hyland, the BBG’s New CFO

Former U.S. Dept. of Energy and NASA financial management/policy director will coordinate multiple budgets

The Broadcasting Board of Governors has appointed Leslie Hyland as chief financial officer. She will begin work at the end of this month.

As CFO, Hyland will oversee the BBG’s budget, accounting and financial agenda, coordinating closely on budgetary matters with Voice of America, Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, Radio Free Asia, Middle East Broadcasting Networks and the Office of Cuba Broadcasting.

Since 2011, Hyland has served as the director of audit and risk management at Australian National University in Canberra, Australia. Before that, she was the director of financial policy with the U.S. Department of Energy and director of financial management for NASA.

She has also held leadership roles in finance and accounting for the International Trade Administration and the U.S. Department of State in Washington, Tokyo and Kiev, Ukraine.

Hyland earned her bachelor’s degree in accounting from the Instituto Tecnologico y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey in Monterrey, Mexico, and is fluent in Spanish.

Her husband, Jason Hyland, is a senior Foreign Service officer who just completed an assignment as deputy chief of mission at U.S. Embassy Canberra. Together they have served in Japan, Australia, Ukraine and other posts.

They have two children: A son, currently a U.S. Army first lieutenant serving in Afghanistan, and a daughter, studying at a university in Australia.

According to the BBG, Hyland’s official start date is July 29.
