iBiquity Digital Corporation is demonstrating the Mitsubishi HD Radio navigation platform at the 2013 NAB Show in booth C451.
This is the first public demonstration of the new advanced navigation system that incorporates Nokia’s HD Radio traffic service transmitted by the Broadcaster Traffic Consortium.
The BTC is comprised of 24 of the country’s broadcasters who provide a nationwide digital broadcast distribution platform for HERE’s advanced traffic and traveler information service. This service will now be available to Mitsubishi owners for free.
IBiquity Digital COO Jeff Jury called the navigation implementation “an excellent example of how automakers and broadcasters are partnering to leverage our technology to offer new services to their customers. Mitsubishi is one of the first OEMs that have announced their integration of HD Radio Digital Traffic services and we expect a number of additional announcements throughout the year.”
The BTC was formed in 2007 with the intention of providing broadcasters a strategic and innovative opportunity to create new revenue out of their HD Radio investment, according to BTC President Paul Brenner. “We are proud of our accomplishments to date as an industry consortium and impressed by the quality in which Mitsubishi is showcasing our HD Radio data services.”
With the BTC and Nokia’s HD Radio service, drivers will now have access to real-time traffic information that extends beyond highways to include smaller roadways; will have the same level of accuracy on traffic speed and time delays due to incidences such as road closures or construction, according to iBiquity. Additionally, Nokia’s HD Radio service will also include weather reports and fuel prices.
