MP3.com To Appeal Infringement Ruling

Web music site MP3.com plans to appeal a judge’s ruling that says the company violated copyrights belonging to Universal Music Group.
U.S. District Court Judge Jed Rakoff’s ruling awarded UMG $25,000 per CD.
Just how many CD’s were involved is in dispute.
Universal claims MP3.com infringed copyrights for about 10,000 CDs, while MP3.com says it’s more like 4,700. UMG asked for $450 million in damages and MP3.com asked the judge to reduce it to $2.35 million. Judge Rakoff is expected to decide on a final figure in November.
The company’s My.MP3.com service is designed to enable consumers to listen online to the CDs they purchase.
The decision comes after MP3.com had already settled similar disputes with Sony, BMG, Warner and EMI.
