These stations not only do well, they do good.
The NAB Educational Foundation announced winners of its eighth annual Service to America Awards; winners will be honored at an event on June 12 in Washington that salutes community service by local broadcasters.
The Service to America - College Radio Award was given to Minnesota State University's KMSU(FM) in Mankato, Minn. Its Human Race Radio program provides facts and opinions on topics such as media bias, the state of religion and community organizations.
A Service to Children Award was given to KVAK(AM-FM) in Valdez, Alaska. The station invites children to the studio each week to participate in the KVAK Kids Club, which aims to engage kids in community service activities.
A Partnership Award was given to WTMX(FM) in Chicago, which for six years has hosted a radiothon for the Children's Miracle Network, raising more than $8 million for Children's Memorial Hospital.
KHUM(FM) in Ferndale, Calif., was honored with a Friend in Need Award for efforts to keep Humboldt County informed during a series of storms between Christmas and New Year's Eve last year.
