The NAB Broadcasters Education Foundation has pledged to fund Howard University’s annual Media Sales Institute for the next five years, bringing NABEF’s total support for this program to nearly a half million dollars. In recognition of this support, the program will now be known as the NAB Media Sales Institute at Howard University.
The Institute is an intensive ten-day program designed to serve as a pipeline for funneling talented students with diverse backgrounds into the broadcast industry. Topics that the Institute covers are the workings of sales departments, advertising agencies and industry associations, as well as sales positions, Nielsen and Arbitron ratings, the Internet and the FCC.
The Institute began in May 2001 and continued the following year with annual support by NABEF. More than 60 students have graduated from the Institute and nearly 90 percent have found promising careers in broadcasting sales. Several companies, including Belo, Hearst-Argyle, Cox Television, Cox Radio, KATZ and ABC Radio have recruited students who have completed the program. ABC Radio and Cox Communications have also provided financial support for the Institute.
