National Geographic Ventures, the for-profit arm of the National Geographic Society, is expanding its audio production operations with plans for a full music and radio division.

National Geographic Ventures, the for-profit arm of the National Geographic Society, is expanding its audio production operations with plans for a full music and radio division.

The effort will include a record label, music publishing house and a radio production group and syndication network. Full details about National Geographic Music and Radio (NGMR) are expected in autumn.

NPR, Clear Channel Radio and Salem Communications will work with NGMR as distribution partners. National Geographic already produces several radio programs, including “Radio Expeditions” in collaboration with NPR and “Pulse of the Planet” as well as several podcasts.

NGMR is focused on seven areas: supervising music for National Geographic divisions; live events; an online music store; syndicated radio programming and HD/Internet channels; a record label; managing music publishing assets of the society; and overseeing musical programming for the National Geographic Channel.

David Beal heads up the NGMR division.
