NDS, which provides encryption technology for digital pay-TV, has made its RadioGuard product commercially available for HD Radio broadcasting.
NDS had RadioGuard for sale in its booth in Charlotte.
The company said the hardware/software product will allow HD Radio end-users to access preferred musical content, pay-per-listen events and other opt-in broadcasts.
Other uses for what the industry is calling “Conditional Access” include radio-reading services for the visually impaired, public works and emergency services channels, as well as opt-in events sponsored by advertisers. Using conditional access on their multicast HD-R channels, stations can permission receivers so that listeners can access the pay channels.
