The familiar voice of Frank Tavares will soon be supplanted; if you don’t know his name, you probably know his voice.
NPR has named Sabrina Farhi as its first on-staff announcer; she will soon be the one to say “Support for NPR comes from…” and “This … is NPR” on all broadcast and digital underwriting credits.
The radio company said Tavares has voiced its funding credits for more than three decades. He moved from Washington in the late 1980s and now records them from his home in Connecticut. His voice and Farhi’s will both be heard on NPR over the last two months of this year. In an announcement, Eric Nuzum, vice president of NPR Programming, stated that out of hundreds of voices, Farhi’s “stood out for its warmth and conversational approach.”
Farhi will record, produce and edit the underwriting credits, and be based in Washington. Her commercial voice-over work includes national campaigns for TIAA-Cref and Bioré Skincare.
