New York AES to Hear From Omnia, Neural on Surround for Radio

AES chapter members in New York will hear about surround sound applications in radio next week.
Frank Foti, president of Omnia, and Geir Skaaden, CEO of Neural Audio Corp., will speak on “Providing 5.1 Surround Sound to FM & HD Radio Listeners.” The meeting, moderated by David Bialik, is Jan. 11 at 7 p.m. at CBS Studios at 524 West 57th Street in New York.
Telos/Omnia and Fraunhofer promote a spatial audio coding system that takes advantage of research in aural perception and enables transmission of 5.1 channel surround audio over FM HD Radio. It is called “Coded-Discrete.” The FhG system works with the HD Radio codec and transmission equipment and is
described as compatible with stereo broadcasts.
Neural says its products allow capture, editing and management of analog, digital, linear, compressed, stereo and 5.1 content within the broadcaster’s existing 2.0 infrastructure. “The consumer may render the content to a spatial format of their choosing including mono, stereo, three channel stereo, quad or 5.1 surround utilizing
Neural’s SEE spatial rendering,” it states.
The meeting is free and open to anyone interested.
