New York Utility Pursues Last Direct Current Customers

Not a radio story but one of interest nonetheless is in the New York Times, about a power company’s attempts to turn off the last remnants of direct current electricity in the Big Apple.
“Under the streets of New York, amid the maze of copper mains and transformers that compose the city’s power grid, an ember of Manhattan’s past will soon fade into darkness,” the Times states. “Con Edison has announced that it aims to shut off direct current electricity, also known as DC, by the end of this year. If all goes according to plan, the only electricity provided by the utility after next December will be alternating current, known as AC.”
