Norway Begins to Switch Off FM Stations

Bauer Media’s Kiss and Radio Rock transition to digital only

A year ahead of when it is required for Norwegian radio stations to shut down FM broadcasts in favor of digital, Bauer Media’s Kiss and Radio Rock stations have switched off their FM stations and are now exclusively available on DAB+ or the Internet.

Bauer Media says the decision to shut off the FM broadcasts of both stations was to accelerate the digitization process. There were cost and programming factors as well, as the FM stations featured two local broadcasts, while the DAB+ station will only have one national broadcast.

Radio Norge, a Bauer Media station located in rural Norway, will still broadcast via FM.

Norway’s official switch off is slated for 2017.
