2wcom has announced that Norway’s new national DAB network is being b
uilt with its DAB+ technology in a major project to ready the country for its FM switch-off in 2017.
According to the German firm, its FlexNsert DAB+ distribution inserter and FlexXtract DAB+ distribution extractor will be deployed in the network’s satellite headend system in what, it says, is believed to be the world’s first to provide DAB radio via standardized IP delivery over Ku-band satellite payload.
Used by Norway’s national broadcaster NRK, the new network will provide nationwide coverage via landline connections to the network’s main transmission sites, complemented by satellite distribution to 400 outlying transmitters reaching remoter communities.
FlexNsert systems at the DAB satellite uplink headend at the Nittedal Teleport outside Oslo can receive DAB data streams in ETI or EDI form, and convert to a standard MPEG-TS signal for satellite contribution, explains 2wcom. Each of the 400 transmission stations served by satellite will use FlexXtract systems to demodulate the DVB-S/S2 signals and convert them to feed the DAB transmitters.
