Norway: Conditions Right to End FM Broadcasts

Norwegian communications authority says DAB networks now serve more than 90 percent of population

Norway’s National Communications Authority (NKom) has announced on its website that the required conditions to sunset FM broadcasts as regards coverage have now been met.

NKom calculated and measured coverage of the country’s DAB networks and determined that digital radio coverage corresponds to the current P1 FM network, and at least 90% population coverage has been reached.

According to NKom findings, population reach for the NRK DAB network is approximately 99.5%, while the commercial network coverage stands at 92.8%.

“The vast majority now have access to digital radio, and it’s time to introduce modern technology also for this medium, as we did for television in 2009,” said Torstein Olsen, director of NKom.
