NPR will create a digital music service. The network says it wants to extend the role that public stations, networks and producers hold in music “discovery” and create a unified place to showcase genres.
The project is tentatively scheduled to roll out in the first half of 2007. NPR says audiences are interested in on-demand and non-traditional ways to find music content, and that noncoms have enormous music assets.
The centerpiece of the service will be a site pooling public radio resources, offering exposure for emerging and non-mainstream artists in various genres.
