Number Nine in Indianapolis Converts to HD Radio

Emmis Communications’ WIBC(AM) has gone IBOC using BE gear, bringing to 9 the total number of stations in that market broadcasting both an analog and digital signal. BE says all facilities in the market are using its equipment to go digital and more have BE IBOC gear on order.
The Emmis Indianapolis cluster converted its AM and plans to transition its 3 FMs to HD Radio as well. WIBC(AM) turned on the digital in December using a BE ASi 10 HD Radio signal generator into an existing 50kW AM transmitter.
Dave Hood, chief engineer of FM for Emmis Indianapolis, said the radio group would begin converting FMs WENS, WNOU and WYXB in April.
Emmis also has a BE Radio Data Dimensions System on order and plans to use the data management system to schedule, store and manage text displays for digital radios.
Clear Channel, Susquehanna Radio, and ABC, as well as a university-run station, are on the air with HD Radio in Indianapolis, in addition to Emmis Communications. Entercom stations WZPL(FM) and WTPI(FM) are expected to convert to HD Radio in March 2005, also using BE equipment.
