NYSBA Names Tom Ray EAS Coordinator

He’ll be a liaison between the state, city and broadcasters for emergency alerting and act as a troubleshooter

Tom Ray has a big client for his new engineering consultancy: New York State Broadcasters Association.

The soon-to-be-former WOR(AM), New York engineer has been named EAS coordinator for New York by the broadcast association.

He’s been coordinating New York City’s EAS and now adds the rest of the state to his duties, including EAS monitoring assignments. Ray tells Radio World he’ll be a liaison between the state, city and broadcasters for emergency alerting and act as a troubleshooter. His duties also include talking with EAS equipment manufacturers.

Ray is also part of a new team of engineers who will be conducting the NYSBA Alternative Broadcast Inspection Program. Stations taking part in the program are exempt from routine FCC inspections for a three-year period, according to the NYSBA.

In addition to Ray, other engineers conducting ABIP inspections are: Bill Kirkpatrick, assistant director of engineering at WABC in New York City; Fred Lass, who recently retired as assistant director of engineering for the Sinclair Broadcast Group and Bud Williamson, president of Digital Radio Broadcasting and operator of three radio stations: WDLC(AM), Port Jervis, N.Y., WYNY(AM), Milford, Pa. and WABT(FM), Stroudsburg, Pa.

Ray is leaving WOR after some 15 and a half years; his last official day is Feb. 28, we reported.
