In a move to add more news programming, Oregon Public Broadcasting says it plans to cancel its remaining six radio music shows and add seven news programs.
Two programs, “In House” with Jeremy Petersen and “American Routes” move from OPB Radio to “opbmusic,” a 24-hour music service listeners can hear on HD Radio, through the SAP channel on television and online. A jazzy mix of “American Routes” also moves to KMHD Jazz Radio at 89.1 FM or online at kmhd.org.
OPB Director of Member Communications John Bell tells The Oregonian that the elimination of the music programs is a reaction to overall listener trends. The station also wants to carve out room for new programs.
“As our audience has changed, we’ve found that they’re coming to us more for news and information than music,” Bell tells the paper. “There’s just so many hours in a day.”
The changes are to take effect Aug. 6.
