Overall, Audio Sales Down in July

Manufacturer-to-dealer sales of audio products reached $617.5 million in dollar sales during the month of July, a decline of 10% compared to the same time last year, according to figures released by the Consumer Electronics Association. Additionally, year-to-date factory-to-dealer sales for audio products reached $2.9 billion, down less than 6% compared to the same period of 2000.
Despite these overall declines, many products within the subcategories enjoyed growth during July. Consumer interest in multi-channel sound continued to grow during July, with dollar sales for total surround sound packages up 194% to $11.2 million. Likewise, sales of component speakers increased by nearly 30% to $11.5 million in July. Sales of headset portable CD players also grew 6% to $13.6 million.
