Pai: Redskins Issue No Place for FCC

Hate speech or non-issue?

FCC Commissioner Ajit Pai believes the FCC should stay out of the debate over the Washington NFL team name.

That’s after Chairman Tom Wheeler confirmed this week the agency is reviewing a petition from activist attorney and George Washington University law professor John F. Banzhaf III that calls the name hate speech.

“As a supporter of the First Amendment, I don’t think the government should ban the use of the ‘Washington Redskins’ team name from the airwaves. But we’ll see what the agency proposes to do in the near future,” Pai, a GOP commissioner, told CNBC this week.

Reader comments continue to pour in to Radio World on the issue.

Marcia Gibson believes the commission needs to “step out,” noting that “everyone needs to quit making an issue out of something that is not an issue.”

Someone calling him or herself “xrey” wrote: “who’s next: the Atlanta Braves and the Milwaukee Braves?”
