Palmetto State Broadcasters Gather in New Year

Convention features broadcast exhibition event offers new local, industry-focused training

The South Carolina Broadcasters Association will hold its annual winter convention and Engineering and Technology Day at the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center, Jan. 24–25, 2013, in Columbia, S.C.. The registration deadline is Jan. 18, 2013, and can be completed online.

The conference offers networking and training opportunities, a broadcast exhibition and the association’s Awards of Distinction ceremony. SCBA also uses the convention to hold elections and the organization’s annual business meeting.

A legislative breakfast on Thursday, Jan. 24, will allow South Carolina legislators and station representatives to interface about issues affecting the broadcast community.

The free broadcast exhibition features 30 vendors, including Harris Corp., Nautel, Utah Scientific, Comrex and WideOrbit showcasing relevant technology and products. It will be held Thursday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Broadcast engineers can also take advantage of training sessions on Jan. 24, beginning at 9 a.m. Topics to be covered range from Part 101 frequencies to FCC regulations to the history of broadcast engineering and its impact on modern station management. Sales professionals are also offered learning opportunities.

The Awards of Distinction dinner and ceremony will be held Jan. 25 at 6 p.m. The event honors Hall of Fame inductee and WCRE(AM) owner-operator Jane Pigg, honorary life membership recipient and owner of Broadtech Services John George and Masters Award recipient, WSPA(TV) anchor and sports director Pete Yannity.
