Pandora Atop September Domestic Digital Listening

Report also details platform preferences

Triton Digital’s September 2014 numbers reinforce Pandora atop the ranking for digital listening hours in the United States, while iHeartMedia is first for streaming regardless of location. The top five streamers for the daypart breakdowns are listed below.

These findings were released as part of the company’s Top 20 Ranker for September 2014, which breaks down the numbers for digital audio stations using its Webcast Metrics audience measurement platform. Audience rankings are done on the basis of “Average Active Sessions,” defined as “Total Listening Hours divided by hours in the reported time period.”

The company also found that Average Active Sessions were up during this period as compared to January of this year — 33.1% for the daypart 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. weekday and 36.2% for the daypart 6 a.m. to midnight weekdays. This was also subdivided by market, and digital listening was up 9.3% in Washington D.C., 8.7% in Philadelphia, 7.8% in Miami, 7% in Detroit and 5.7% in Portland, Ore.

Also of interest, Trition Digital broke down the listening by platform. iOs devices led the 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday-Friday daypart at 32%, followed by 27% via Android and 9% via Flash Player. According to the report, the majority of digital listening via Android came from Los Angeles, while New Yorkers had the most iOs listening. Additionally, 76% of Houston’s digital listening occurred via mobile, and Boston listeners were the most likely to do so via desktop at 40%.
