Powell: Media Ownership Rules Will Really Happen

“We will have broadcast ownership rules at the end of this proceeding.” That’s what FCC Chairman Michael Powell said to attendees at a panel on media ownership at Columbia University.
The commission must justify the need for each media ownership rule every two years, and Powell said courts have become “more skeptical” of the agency’s rationales for imposing ownership limits. “Either we produce evidence that a rule is still necessary, or it must be eliminated,” he said.
Powell urged anyone with a stake in the outcome of the proceeding to file public comments with the FCC. “It is not enough to say, ‘This is a problem’ or, ‘This is what I think.’ Give us something we can actually use to defend ownership rules.”
