Prague Host to Anniversary of Radio Liberty Broadcasts

Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty marked the 50th anniversary of broadcasts to the countries of the former Soviet Union with a series of events that included a conference in Prague on June 6 at the RFE/RL Broadcast Operations Center.
Russian, Tajik and Turkmen language broadcasts began on March 1, 1953, with the launch of Radio Liberation. Within days these were joined by broadcasts in Armenian, Azeri, Belarusian, Georgian, Kazakh, Kyrgyz and Uzbek; a few months later programs debuted in Tatar-Bashkir and Ukranian. In 1959 the name was changed to Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty.
