PRI Adds BBC Mundo to HD-R Multicast Portfolio

Public Radio International added BBC Mundo to its lineup of public radio programming used for multicast channels.
BBC Mundo is a Spanish-language service featuring several programs. It’s produced by BBC World Service.
KPCC(FM) in Los Angeles, KVCR(FM) in San Bernardino and KNAU(FM) in Flagstaff, Ariz., are among PRI affiliate stations slated to launch BBC Mundo this month on their HD Radio multicast channels.
Eleanor Harris, senior VP and head of PRI Marketing and Distribution, said, PRI’s producing partners, particularly the BBC World Service, “put us in a great position to offer programs for stations’ supplementary audio channels to reach new audiences through HD Radio.”
PRI has 732 affiliate stations. Its new or recent HD Radio program streams include BBC World Service and a station-branded classical music service, Classical 24, produced by American Public Media. Also, stations can use PRI programming to create custom streams for their SACs and provide content not currently available in their markets.
NPR, too, offers programming streams for the supplemental digital channels.
PRI is also participating in a consortium of public radio program providers that will test and refine the program-associated data operating practices for public radio, an effort partly funded by a CPB grant.
The consortium, on which RW Online has reported here, will establish guidelines for presenting the various types of public radio program data that appear on consumers’ HD Radio receivers.
