Almost a quarter of a million dollars raised in two days for southwestern Virginia children battling cancer.
That’s a “Star Country”-sized fundraising effort.
Country outlet 94.9 WSLC(FM) in Roanoke, Va., the 95 kW FM signal owned by Mel Wheeler, Inc. with its antenna atop the peak of Poor Mountain, raised a record $241,853 for pediatric cancer patients during its 20th annual “Cure Kids Cancer Radiothon.”
The two-day broadcast aired Aug. 7–8 on WSLC. Held in partnership with Children’s Miracle Network Southwest Virginia, the radiothon sends all of its proceeds to Carilion Children’s Hospital to support approximately 40 local families currently receiving care in the oncology department.
Morning hosts Brett Sharp and Taylor Sherrill have been integral in driving the station’s annual campaign, which has now raised around $3 million during its 20-year history.
WSLC shared a highlight video celebrating the milestone on its Facebook page.
Carilion Children’s is located within Roanoke Memorial Hospital in Roanoke. The hospital maintains a 60-bed Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, an 8-bed Pediatric Intensive Care Unit and a 24-bed Pediatric Unit.
