PRX Adds “On Being” to Distribution Platform

Program will continue to be based in Twin Cities area

Krista Tippett Public Productions’ “On Being” will join the distribution and digital portfolio of PRX, effective July 1, according to a release.

Public radio online marketplace PRX will take over operations previously handled by American Public Media, the national distribution arm of Minnesota Public Radio.

Tippett originally piloted her program at MPR in the early 2000s, launching a weekly series in 2003 with the title “Speaking of Faith.” The program’s website describes it as “a social enterprise with a radio show at its heart” and since 2013, “On Being” has been an independent production of Minneapolis nonprofit Krista Tippett Public Productions. The program will continue to be based in the region.

“This idea would not have been welcomed with greater generosity anywhere else,” Tippett said. “MPR/APM will always have a foundational place in the self-understanding of ‘On Being,’ and we hope to deepen our strong and ongoing broadcast partnership moving forward.”

“On Being” has received both Peabody and Webby awards — the only public radio program to be so honored in the same year. The program airs weekly on nearly 400 public radio stations, in addition to an increase in annual podcast downloads from 6 million to 21 million.

“We’re thrilled to help bring this content and impact to an even wider web of audiences and platforms,” said PRX Chief Operating Officer Kerri Hoffman.

KTPP also hosts The Civil Conversations Project and has released a new podcast, “Becoming Wise,” drawn from content in Tippett’s new book of the same name, available this week. MPR is hosting the launch of “Becoming Wise” at the Fitzgerald Theater, St. Paul, Minn., in April.
