Radio France to Cease Medium Wave Transmission

All medium wave broadcasts will stop at midnight on Dec. 31

When the clock strikes midnight on Dec. 31, it will not only be the end of 2015, it will be the end of medium wave (526.5-1606.5 kHz) broadcasting for Radio France. This will cease the broadcast of France Info and France Blue over medium wave transmissions, but Radio France will continue to offer those services through FM and the Internet.

Initially commissioned between 1937 and 1944, medium wave broadcasting is now obsolete, says Radio France. The broadcaster adds that this scheduled stop aims “to adapt the mode of dissemination of our broadcasts to new uses and technologies today.” This will see Radio France investing more in FM and the distribution of its channels and programs on connected devices and other new services.

Radio France has also announced that it will reach a decision of whether or not to keep longwave broadcasting by Dec. 31, 2016.
