“Radio New Europe” will succeed the recently closed Bulgarian Service of Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty. Its chairman will be Gueorgui Stoychev, who had been director of the Bulgarian Service.
The new service is a nonprofit organization; it will carry over many programs from the old service and employ some of the same staff. But it is no longer funded by the U.S. government’s RFE/RL.
Organizers said it will be modeled on public radio stations in the United States and Europe. It will air on frequencies in nine Bulgarian cities and is seeking funding support.
